MARK JEFFERY                                                                                   SOLO WORK

Mutt (1999)

Developed out of a Chapter/Cardiff Art in Time Comission, Mutt is based on the relationship between the autobiographical and the artist. Through the persona of an evacuee, Jeffery investigates themes of the traumatic, of desire, abandonment, gender and of a nostalgia ‘that I was never a part of, but always wanted to be.’ Jeffery looks at stories of abandonment and nightmares confined under the sea. He can tell his mind has become soured by the salt water, his skin thickened and weary his desire barren. Spiralling around the recurrent and tortuous memory of the love he has left behind. ‘Me, is your witness; he wants to speak, to all of you, now.’
